Progress! The Humane Cosmetics Act Has Been Reintroduced
Great news! A group of bipartisan lawmakers, led by U.S. Representatives Don Beyer (D-VA), Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Ken Calvert (R-CA), Paul Tonko (D-NY), and Nanette Barragán (D-CA), have recently taken the important step of reintroducing the Humane Cosmetics Act in the 119th Congress.
This crucial bill would end safety testing of cosmetic products on animals and prohibit the sale of products developed using animal testing in the United States. Half a million animals, including rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, and rats, are tortured and likely killed as a result of these experiments each year in the United States, despite the fact that these types of tests are outdated, unnecessary, and ineffective.
In a press release on the reintroduction of the bill, Rep. Buchanan, who serves as co-chair of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, stated, “Subjecting animals to painful experiments to test cosmetics is inhumane and entirely unnecessary. Scientific advancements have created viable alternatives to these cruel experiments, while still ensuring that cosmetic products are safe for human use. As countries around the world work to prohibit animal testing in cosmetics, it’s time for the United States to get on board.” Rep. Beyer also noted, “The Humane Cosmetics Act would outlaw an obsolete and inhumane practice without damaging American businesses. I thank my colleagues for supporting the Humane Cosmetics Act, which I hope will receive swift consideration.”
The legislation was reintroduced with the bill number H.R.1657 and already has 61 co-sponsors. If you haven’t already please sign our petition in support of the Humane Cosmetics Act to increase momentum for this crucial bill!
