Stop Animals Being Tortured for Cosmetics

Join Species Unite in urging US Congress to pass the Humane Cosmetics Act, which would nationally ban cosmetic animal testing.
Every year, millions of animals suffer through horrific, torturous experiments just to make cosmetics.
These tests include dripping chemicals into animals’ eyes, shaving their fur and rubbing chemicals onto their exposed skin, forcing chemicals down animals’ throats, and so many other unimaginable forms of cruelty. And when the tests are over the animals that survived the initial torture are slaughtered and dissected. Half a million animals including rabbits, mice, guinea pigs and rats die as the result of these experiments each year.
And what’s worse is that animal testing is unnecessary and less effective than alternative, cruelty-free methods that have been developed. For example, a carcinogenicity test, which involves the use of about 400 animals per test, is only 42% effective at detecting human cancers, which is its only purpose.
Alternative methods that use simple organisms like bacteria, tissues and cells from humans, and sophisticated computer models or chemical methods are cheaper, more reliable, and don’t come at the expense of animals being tortured and murdered.
Countries around the world, such as every country in the European Union, Australia, Mexico, and India, have all acknowledged that this cruelty is unnecessary, and have banned the use of animal testing in cosmetics. In the US, eleven states have passed laws to end the sale of animal-tested cosmetics, however, because there is no legislation that bans cosmetic animal testing on a national level, cosmetic companies in the United States are still legally allowed to perform invasive tests on animals.
Fortunately, there are national legislators that have decided to take a stand against this horrifying practice. A bipartisan delegation led by Don Beyer (D-VA), Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), Ken Calvert (R-CA), and Paul Tonko (D-NY) reintroduced H.R. 5399, the Humane Cosmetics Act of 2023, on September 12, 2023.
The bill would outlaw cosmetic animal testing, and also prohibit the sale of any cosmetic product that has been tested on animals. It would save countless animals from suffering and dying at the hands of a greedy and heartless multi-billion dollar industry.

Cheaper, more accurate, cruelty-free alternatives exist, and to oppose those is to oppose progress and economic development. States around the country have already voted to ban this practice, and a national ban on animal testing is the final push this country needs to be brought into the 21st century in this industry. Please do your part to help get this bill passed.
