NYC Politician Eric Adams Releases New Vegan Book Helping To Reverse Chronic Illnesses
His incredible story reveals how he reversed type-2 diabetes by adopting a plant-based diet.
The Brooklyn Borough President and plant-based advocate Eric Adams has written a new book that reveals how he reversed his own type-2 diabetes by adopting a plant-based diet.
After realising his diet was negatively affecting his health, Adams helped cure his own diabetes and partial blindness back in 2016 by making the switch from animal products to a plant-based diet.
Since then he's been on a mission to implement plant-based diets and nutrition in hospitals, schools, prisons, and communities all over New York City.
Now, Adams’ new book Healthy at Last: A Plant-Based Approach to Preventing and Reversing Diabetes and Other Chronic Illnesses, brings together his health journey to help others make the connection between their diets and preventable chronic illnesses, and also offers a guide for people of color to advocate for themselves and improve their health.
Diabetes in the African-American community is “one of the most stubborn health problems” in the U.S., says Adams, adding that “African-Americans are heavier and sicker than any other group in America, but that doesn’t have to be the case”.
The politician, who previously worked for 22 years as a police officer, hopes his first-hand knowledge of how a plant-based diet changed his own life will help change others’ lives too. For Adams, within weeks of his diet change he lost 35 pounds, lowered his cholesterol by 30 points - and completely cured his diabetes.
The book therefore shows readers “how to avoid processed foods, cut down on salt, get more fiber, and substitute chicken and pork with plant-based alternatives, all while staying true to the roots of soul food”.
And it also includes guest recipes from dozens of celebrities and health experts too, with contributions from the likes of Paul McCartney, Alan Cumming, Moby, Queen Afua, Dr. Michael Greger, Jenné Claiborne, and more.
Earlier this year, Species Unite spoke with Eric about his incredible journey so far - listen to the episode here.
