As we enter a new decade, an estimated 80 billion land animals continue to be used and consumed by humans each year. Now, this uncomfortable truth is revealed in Hidden: Animals in the Anthropocene, an unflinching new book of photography documenting our relationship with non-human animals in the 21st Century.

Having launched an online crowdfunder for the book back in April, the project has already received overwhelming support, with the initial target of $65,000 CAD achieved in just three days. Oscar-winning actor and long-time vegan activist, Joaquin Phoenix, is among supporters of the project, and will write the book’s foreword.

“The photojournalists represented in Hidden have entered some of the darkest, most unsettling places in the world”, Phoenix says. “The images they have captured are a searing reminder of our unpardonable behavior towards animals and will serve as beacons of change for years to come."

With the current Coronavirus pandemic highlighting our relationship with wildlife, never has a book like this been more relevant to the future of all animals, human and non-human.

“These stories are too important to be overlooked and unpublished, or just briefly shared in a flurry of social media posts”, says publisher, WeAnimals Media. “They are too relevant to the future well-being of these animals to be overlooked by an inherently conservative media committed to maintaining the status quo and protecting the sensitivities of their audience. This book is a document that will be long-lived. It is proof of what is and what should never again be.”
