Tracye McQuirter, the award-winning public health nutritionist, is launching a new campaign encouraging 10,000 Black women to go vegan.

“[There’s] nearly 800 black folks a day dying mostly from diet-related diseases”, McQuirter recently told The Washington Post. McQuirter has long advocated the health benefits of a plant-based diet, having authored the first vegan diet book for black women over ten years ago, By Any Greens Necessary.

Now, her new campaign includes a free, 21-day online program of cooking videos, recipes and meal plans designed to actively encourage black women to embrace veganism.

McQuirter explains how black people “experience the highest rates of heart disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease and lung disease”, and how a whole-food, plant-based diet “can reduce your risk of chronic disease by 80 percent or more”.

The initiative takes on greater significance amid the current coronavirus pandemic, which also disproportionately affects black and ethnic minorities.

“To mark the tenth anniversary [of By Any Greens Necessary], I’m launching a program to help 10,000 Black women go vegan in 2020—in one year. Why? Because while Black women are leaders in so many progressive ways, we are in a crisis when it comes to our health.” Hear more from McQuirter in the video below.
