A new documentary that examines the global fishing industry’s devastating impact on the environment and marine life has launched on Netflix this month.

Seaspiracy follows the story of a filmmaker documenting the harm that humans do to marine species - and what he uncovers is alarming global corruption and widespread environmental destruction.

The full length documentary comes from the makers of Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret and What the Health, two popular films that have had a huge impact on raising awareness of the link between animal agriculture and widespread environmental and health issues. The likes of F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and fashion designer Tom Ford have cited the films in reasons why they stopped eating animal products.

And now Seaspiracy is set to follow suit by putting the fishing industry’s devastating impact in front of millions of viewers, after it launched on Netflix on March 24th. The streaming platform helps put the film in front of its 200+ million members across 190+ countries.

“Seaspiracy will radically transform the way we think and act on ocean conservation forever”, says the film’s press release. “It is time we focus our ecological and ethical concerns on our seas and its inhabitants. This is a new era for how we treat the most important habitat on earth”.

With increased awareness of how fishing negatively impacts marine life and the ocean, investors and food manufacturers are betting big on the rise of sustainable plant-based seafood to help preserve our seas.

Innovators like cell-based seafood start-up BlueNalu, use fish cells to cultivate seafood in a lab rather than taking fish from the oceans. The San-Diego based company recently raised an unprecedented $60 million from investors to help launch its products, while a Singapore company has unveiled the world’s first lab-grown lobster meat.

With figures estimating that over 2.7 billion wild fish are killed every single day, cutting-edge products like lab-grown seafood are set to provide a sustainable and kind solution to meet the global demand for seafood products. And with the debut of Seaspiracy bringing awareness of the industry on a global platform to a mass audience, demand for plant-based seafood will only rise.
