“Plants to the People” supply 2000 free vegan meals to those in need and first responders.

Around the world, the coronavirus has devastated the lives of many. But, amidst the pandemic, stories of compassion and community spirit are shining through.

In a new partnership, called “Plants to the People”, Brooklyn-Borough President and prominent vegan Eric Adam joined the animal rights organization, Mercy for Animals (MFA) and hunger-relief charity Community Solidarity to distribute 2000 vegan meals to those in need.

Workers on the front lines of the relief efforts, including police officers, hospital workers, and firefighters, were among the first people to receive the free plant-based meals.

“Access to healthy, plant-based food has always been a priority of mine, but it is especially important during these difficult times,” Adams said. “Many Brooklynites are food-insecure, and the spread of coronavirus has made it even more difficult to access food, which is why I was happy to offer this necessity while simultaneously supporting some of my favorite vegan establishments. I want to thank Mercy for Animals and Community Solidarity for partnering with us on this important initiative.”

“Plants to the People” purchased meals from nine local Brooklyn-based plant-based restaurants in an effort to help support small businesses during this challenging time.

Bar Velo, Brooklyn Whiskers Bakery, Urban Vegan Kitchen, Blossom, Screamer’s Pizzeria, Champs Diner, By Chloe, and Monk’s Meats supplied meals such as vegan chicken sandwiches and BBQ combo platters to the initiative.

“So grateful for Mercy for Animals, Community Solidarity, and BP Eric Adams. Thanks to them we get to live another day. Be strong y’all and support those who support you,” Urban Vegan Kitchen said on Instagram.
