Victory! CA Governor Signs Octopus Farming Bill Into Law
It is official, California is now the second state in the United States to ban commercial octopus farming!
Governor Gavin Newsom has signed A.B. 3162, the Oppose Cruelty to Octopuses (OCTO) Act into law. This important legislation prohibits octopus farming on both land and water in California and will also ban the import of commercially farmed octopus into the state. The bipartisan bill faced zero opposition from California lawmakers, a positive sign that signals real potential for a similar ban at the national level.
California's ban, following a similar law passed in Washington State, demonstrates that both locals and lawmakers are firmly opposed to the development of cruel and unethical octopus farms in the U.S., like the one planned by Nueva Pescanova in Spain.
While state-level action is crucial, the threat of this abusive industry calls for stronger measures, and a federal ban is the most important step to ensure the United States does not become a stronghold for this new form of factory farming. That is where the Trade of Octopus Produced through Unethical Strategies (OCTOPUS) Act comes in. This important bill would prohibit the intensive breeding of octopuses in the United States and ban imports of octopus products from international farms.
