DA Vows to Take Monkey Prison Fight to Georgia Supreme Court
Despite a recent setback in the Georgia Court of Appeals, which ruled that the state could not legally appeal its earlier decision to validate $300 million in tax revenue bonds for constructing a monkey breeding facility in Bainbridge, Decatur County District Attorney Joe Mulholland has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to preventing the controversial project. The facility was approved without following proper regulatory procedures and DA Mulholland has vowed that he will bring the fight all the way to the Georgia Supreme Court.
Residents of the small town where the massive monkey breeding facility would be built have been steadfast in their efforts to block the project since it was announced nearly a year ago. In response to District Attorney Mulholland's declaration that he will take the case to the state's highest court, locals expressed renewed determination to continue their fight. Elise Boyd, a member of the Stand Up Bainbridge GA opposition movement, emphasized their resolve, stating, "We’re not done. It will not be done. We do believe that the Supreme Court is going to rule in our favor that the bond should be invalid because it was based on fraudulent information."
Safer Human Medicine, the company behind the proposed monkey breeding facility, also reaffirmed its commitment to moving forward with the project despite District Attorney Mulholland’s announcement, ongoing objections from Bainbridge residents, and additional legal challenges. The company also continues to make misleading claims, suggesting that the Georgia Court of Appeals' decision to uphold the previously awarded bond validation confirms that the Bainbridge Town Council followed the proper legal process in approving the project, which is clearly not the case.
The Georgia Supreme Court must now decide whether to hear the case brought by the Decatur County District Attorney or let the Georgia Court of Appeals' ruling stand. Regardless of the outcome, District Attorney Mulholland has made it clear that he will continue to pursue every legal avenue to stop this cruel and dangerous project.
As the fight approaches its one-year mark, Stand Up Bainbridge GA needs our support now more than ever.
