Vegan for Health: Star-Studded ‘The Game Changers’ Documentary To Get Sequel
Produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan, the original documentary examined why some of the world’s leading athletes and scientists are championing a plant-based diet for improved health and strength.
The SpringHill Company, founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, has announced that it will be producing an upcoming sequel to the popular plant-based fitness documentary The Game Changers.
The original film, which explored the rising number of professional athletes adopting plant-based diets, was a huge hit with over 100M viewers on the streaming platform Netflix. Produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan, the film gathered leading athletes including bodybuilders, MMA fighters, NFL players, ultra-marathon runners and cyclists, to examine how plant-based foods had positively impacted their athletic performances.
Now, the sequel aims to add to that discussion and cover everything that has happened in plant-based fitness since.
“This as a unique opportunity to expand on the cultural conversation The Game Changers ignited around the fundamental role food can play in addressing some of the most critical issues of our time,” said Philip Byron, Head of Documentaries at The SpringHill Company.
As reported by Deadline, the sequel will be co-directed by Stephanie Soechtig and Kristin Lazure, the filmmakers behind Fed Up, Knock Down the House, and The Devil We Know.
“[Game Changers] had a profound impact on us as individuals and as filmmakers. We know there’s so much more to unpack, and we couldn’t be more excited to join this team,” said Soechtig and Lazure.
Vegan Athletes
The dramatic rise in plant-based diets within the NFL is covered in the original Game Changers movie, and is used as a prime example of how using healthy plant-based protein can help improve athletes strength and recovery.
The New England Patriots’ defensive tackle Lawrence Guy has credited his longevity on the sports field to his primarily vegan lifestyle: "you get beat up on this field every day. Your body needs nutrition more than ever to recover. What's the best way to do that? I think it's plant-based. All you're doing is prolonging your career in a certain way."
Fellow New England Patriots player Cam Newton also embraced a plant-based diet back in 2019, with the 245-pound quarterback explaining that the diet helps accelerate his recovery and makes him “feel like a rookie again”.
Other notable plant-based athletes include tennis ace Novak Djokovic, F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, NBA star Enes Kanter, NFL icon Colin Kaepernick, and tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams.
