TikTok ‘Vegan Chicken’ Hack Uses Just Two Ingredients
Tutorials of the recipe are racking up millions of video views, as online chefs use only flour and water to make an incredibly realistic ‘chicken’ substitute.
A new ‘vegan chicken’ hack that uses just two ingredients is surprising - and wowing - millions of social media users as videos of the recipe go viral on platforms including TikTok.
The recipe requires only flour and water - and the end result is an incredibly realistic ‘chicken’ substitute that tears and shreds just like the real thing.
When you knead wheat flour with water, you remove the starch and are left with a mass of gluten protein that can be flavored or cooked as desired.
It may be new to many on social media, but the recipe has actually been around for hundreds of years. Buddhist Monks in Ancient China are said to have invented the process of making ‘wheat meat’. Also known as seitan, the recipe helped monks follow a meat-free diet, which was central to their beliefs.
Now, seitan is more popular than ever, and has been popularized in the West as part of the growing popularity in meat-free diets.
Videos of people trying their hand at the recipe - some successful, and others not quite so much - are racking up millions of views on social media with the hashtag #veganchicken.
Want to try the recipe yourself? The Seitan Society has a more in-depth (but still simple!) description that’s easy to follow - find it here.
Why not try making seitan as part of a Vegan Night with family and friends this season? Visit Species Unite’s Vegan Nights page to find recipes, tips, and more on how to host your perfect evening in.
