Taco Bell is Adding Plant-Based Meat to its Menu
The chain is ready to embrace plant-based protein in its 7,000-plus stores.
Taco Bell’s new chief executive officer is set to bring plant-based protein to the popular fast-food chain “within a year”.
“We definitely see that plant-based protein has a place on the menu”, CEO Mark King told Bloomberg Green.
King revealed that he’s already met with leading plant-based meat brands including Beyond Meat Inc. and Impossible Foods Inc. He added, “I tried all the food which was really exciting, and way beyond my expectation”.
Taco Bell hasn't decided exactly what products will feature, so fans may have to wait a little longer until the plant-based proteins launch “within a year”.
In the meantime, the brand is also adding a “Veggie Mode” on March 12, which makes it easier than ever to order their vegetarian and vegan fare. The one-swipe “Veggie Mode” button will appear on order kiosks, and will instantly only show Taco Bell’s nearly 50 vegetarian options, many of which can be customized into a vegan option.
Taco Bell is just the latest brand to embrace the growing plant-based market. The popularity of plant-based proteins continues to soar, with sales reaching $946.6 million in 2019 - 10.2 percent higher than the previous year. Those figures reflect the changing tastes across the US, as almost one in four Americans say they are cutting back on eating meat.
