Stella McCartney Stages Powerful Animal-Skins Protest at Paris Fashion Week
Models in life-size animal costumes hit the runway with animal-rights message.
Fashion designer Stella McCartney is known for using her platform to promote animal-free fashion, and her runway at this week’s Paris Fashion Week is no exception. In perhaps her most visual protest yet, models wearing the brand’s latest collection were joined by people in life-size animal costumes.
Rabbits, cows, and crocodiles were among the costumes that brought attention to how the fashion industry uses the skins of animals in its designs.
“[A] fur coat has a much higher impact on the environment than a fake-fur one for many, many reasons,” McCartney told Vogue in 2019. “One is animal cruelty, which no one seems to care about or want to talk about, but in my mind, that’s an important part of the conversation.”
The leading designer has long championed sustainability and animal-free fashion, with her namesake brand having been leather-, fur-, and feather-free since 2001.
Since then, many of the world’s leading designers, including Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger, and Ralph Lauren, have followed suit by moving away from animal fur. Macy’s, Farfetch, and Prada are among the latest brands to have banned fur from their collections.
