Shake Shack has announced new permanent additions to its menu - and they’re all meat-free.

Consumer demand for tasty and sustainable plant-based food is increasing, and leading brands and franchises are racing to meet that demand by launching plant-based versions of their signature products.

Now, Shake Shack is the latest restaurant to cater to the growing vegan market, with the launch of a non-dairy chocolate shake and a non-dairy frozen custard. The new non-dairy chocolate shake and frozen custard are permanent menu additions after a successful trial launch last year.

The two new products are made using NotMilk, a sustainable, plant-based milk alternative that tastes, cooks and blends just like cow’s milk.

NotMilk is the creation of Chilean food-tech company, NotCo, which uses its patented AI technology platform, dubbed Giuseppe, to mimic the taste of animal-based products. NotCo’s technology is able to analyze animal-based food products at a molecular level and then replicate the complex flavors by using only plant-based ingredients.

This means that near-identical dairy products can be produced with a fraction of the environmental impact and without having to farm any animals. NotCo says it uses 32.5 percent less energy and 83 percent less water in the production process, and generates 37 percent less CO2 than conventional animal products.

The two frozen treats, which are completely plant-based, launch alongside a vegetarian meat-free burger. The so-called Veggie Shack burger, features a vegan patty that’s packed with mushrooms, sweet potatoes, farro, and quinoa.

While the meat-free Veggie Shack is suitable for vegetarians, it isn’t considered vegan. It can only be made vegan if ordered without cheese and ShackSauce, and with a lettuce wrap instead of a bun.

The nationwide rollout of a meat-free burger and two plant-based frozen treats signal Shake Shack’s commitment to offering more sustainable options compared to animal-based meat and dairy products.

“These impactful additions to our core menu give our guests more options, and we can’t wait to roll them out for Shack fans across the country”, Jay Livingston, Shake Shack’s Chief Marketing Officer said in a statement.

The three new products are available in Shacks across the US starting May 5.
