Tennis legend Roger Federer has become the latest star to embrace sustainable fashion, with the launch of ‘The Roger’ - his new line of sneaker, made from vegan leather.

Made in collaboration with the Swiss footwear giant, On, the sneakers merge performance technology with sustainable materials.

With Federer wanting the sneaker to be comfortable for everyday use, On decided to use on-trend vegan leather. “Vegan leather increases all-day comfort and reduces the shoe’s environmental impact”, the brand says.

Vegan leather is becoming increasingly popular, as fashion designers and leading brands strive to use more environmentally friendly and ethical fabrics.

The footwear industry in particular has embraced such alternatives, with New Balance, Puma, and Balenciaga, recently launching designs that use animal-free leather. Just this month, Adidas released revamps of classic sneakers as part of its ‘Our Icons Go Vegan’ line.

These industry changes are positive news for animals, with the leather industry estimated to slaughter around 1 billion animals for their skins every year.
