Plant-Based Food Market Now Worth $5 Billion in U.S.

Sales for plant-based foods reached a record $5 billion last year, as more and more U.S. consumers continue to choose animal-free products.

According to market research firm SPINS, retail sales of plant-based foods increased by 11 percent last year. In comparison, overall U.S. retail food sales grew just 2 percent.

The chart below shows how plant-based products are growing at an exponential rate in comparison to their animal-based counterparts.

Vegan egg sales for example, saw the biggest growth - up 192 percent last year - with sales climbing from $3 million to $10 million.

These figures reflect the changing tastes across the US, with almost one in four Americans now cutting back on eating meat.
