Nestlé Announces Vegan KitKat

As the world’s largest food and beverage company, Nestlé says it wants to be at the “forefront” of the vegan “food revolution” as more and more consumers switch to plant-based food choices.

A plant-based KitKat is launching this year as part of what Nestlé calls the vegan “food revolution”.

With the rise in popularity of plant-based food, the world’s biggest companies and brands are busy releasing vegan versions of their most popular products.

Now it’s the turn of the world-famous chocolate bar, KitKat.

Dubbed the “KitKat V”, Nestlé’s chocolatiers and food scientists have recreated the popular treat with a rice-based alternative, resulting in what it calls a "perfect balance between crispy wafer and smooth chocolate". And the chocolate is made using 100% sustainable cocoa. 

“The most common request we see on social media is for a vegan KitKat, so we’re delighted to be able to make that wish come true”, says Alex Gonnella, Marketing Director for Nestlé Confectionery. 

Nestlé has noticed the growing demand for plant-based food choices, as consumers are increasingly aware of the impact that meat and dairy products have on the environment, farmed animals, and people’s health. 

“There is a quiet food revolution underway that is changing how people eat”, Gonnella explained. “We want to be at the forefront of that, championing the discovery of plant-based food and beverages. What better proof of that than offering a plant-based version of one of our oldest and most famous brands?”

 And other global players have noticed the same global trend, too: earlier this month Starbucks’ CEO told investors that plant-based food and drink is the ‘most dominant shift’ in consumer behavior. Meanwhile IKEA, one of the world’s largest food providers, pledged to make its business more sustainable by making 50% of its menus vegan.

As the world's largest food and beverage company, Nestlé is set to play a major role in helping the global food industry shift towards more sustainable, plant-based food choices. The company recently built its first plant-based food factory in China last year, as part of a $100 million investment to expand its production capacity in the region.
