Lewis Hamilton’s Plant-Based Burger Chain Opens in the US
Neat Burger’s arrival in the US is the latest sign of the growing popularity of plant-based burgers, as consumers increasingly opt for more sustainable food choices.
A plant-based burger chain founded by F1 champion Lewis Hamilton has opened its first permanent location in the US.
Originally launched in the UK in 2019, Neat Burger and its offering of burgers, bowls and shakes, has quickly expanded with eight restaurants now in its home country, as well as one location in Dubai, UAE.
The brand’s appetite for expansion also included a six-month pop-up location on Park Avenue. Now, the US has its first permanent Neat Burger, with Neat Burger NYC opening in the city last week.
Located in the Nolita neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, the new restaurant’s menu features many of the brand’s favorites from the UK, as well as plant-based takes on all-American classics.
Mains include classic burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, and salad bowls, while you can top up with sides like loaded fries, tater tots, and spicy corn ribs. Sweet treats are available too, including cookies and shakes.
“We created Neat Burger to make plant-based eating more accessible to everyone whether you eat plant-based all the time or just want to add it to your diet every now and again”, explained Lewis Hamilton in a previous press statement. “The response to Neat Burger since we opened has been incredible.”
Plant-Based Burgers for the Planet
Plant-based meat typically requires a fraction of the land and resources compared to animal-based meat, which is why Neat Burger positions its plant-based menu as better for the planet.
Climate experts and campaigners see swapping meat for plant-based meats as a key solution in making a more sustainable food system, and the sector has attracted high-profile investors including the likes of actor and climate activist Leonardo DiCaprio, who has also invested in Neat Burger.
Taking to Twitter, DiCaprio said “NeatBurger’s pioneering approach to alternative proteins is a great example of the type of solutions we need to disrupt our food system and make a real difference in reducing global emissions and I'm excited to support as an investor.”
The Plant-Based Burger Revolution
Plant-based burgers have gone mainstream in recent years, and even some of the world’s biggest burger brands are going plant-based. Fast-food giant Burger King has predicted that half its menu will be 50 percent plant-based within less than a decade, and has even trialed making plant-based burgers the default option when customers order, as part of its “Normal, or With Meat?” campaign.
The popularity of plant-based burgers has increased availability too, with the likes of Impossible burgers found in leading eateries including White Castle, The Cheesecake Factory, and Hard Rock Cafe, while Beyond Burger’s famous ‘bloody’ patties can be found in supermarkets as well as restaurants like TGI Fridays.
