JUST Egg Sells Plant-Based Equivalent of 100 Million Eggs Since 2018

The huge milestone marks a shift in consumer habits as the food tech company behind the innovative product secures $200 million in its latest funding round.

America’s fastest growing egg brand JUST Egg has revealed that it has sold the plant-based equivalent of 100 million eggs since 2018, a milestone that shows a remarkable innovation in an industry sector that has long remained relatively unchanged.

The JUST Egg, made from protein-rich mung beans and free from cholesterol, is said to cook, look, and taste like the real thing - except it’s made entirely from plants and contains no animal products at all. 

From its initial launch in 2018, the JUST Egg has continued to disrupt the food sector, being sold in restaurants, foodservice, and supermarkets, and in some places even being used to replace animal eggs entirely. 

One of China’s leading fast-food chains, Dicos, who have over 2,600 stores across the country, recently replaced their conventional egg patty with the JUST Egg. Dicos’ move marked the first time a major quick service restaurant swapped an animal-based product with a plant-based one across multiple regular menu offerings.

And this global popularity of the product has spurred increasing interest from investors: Eat Just, the company behind the JUST Egg announced last month that it had secured $200 million in a new funding round led by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the sovereign wealth fund of the State of Qatar. The round was joined by private investment firm Charlesbank Capital Partners and Vulcan Capital, the investment arm of the estate of Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul G. Allen.

The food tech startup has now raised more than $650 million since its founding in 2011.
