A new documentary focused on the future of agriculture and cultured meat is set to be narrated by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall.

Meat the Future is a documentary by the award-winning filmmaker Liz Marshall, that follows the journey of cultured meat start-up Upside Foods (previously Memphis Meats) and its visionary CEO, Dr. Uma Valeti over the course of five years.

“I’m excited about the documentary because it is solution-focused. The film proposes a way forward, to reduce methane, to reduce water and land use, to lessen the suffering of animals, and to prevent future viral outbreaks”, said Goodall. “I hope it sparks your imagination and inspires change.

Valeti, a former Mayo Clinic cardiologist, co-founded Upside Foods in 2015, and has since taken the cultivated meat world by storm. The start-up has already pioneered the world’s first multi-species, cell-based meat platform and made history by unveiling chicken, duck, and beef grown directly from animal cells. Last year, Upside Foods secured $161 million during its Series B funding round - the largest ever funding round in the cell-based meat industry.

Also known as cell-based or cultivated meat, lab-grown meat is one of the leading solutions to eliminating factory farms and making the suffering of animals in the farming industry a thing of the past. And because it’s crafted in a lab rather than via animals on a farm, it’s healthier than conventional meat because it contains no antibiotics.

Meat the Future originally premiered at the 2020 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in 2020. Now, the film has been updated to include new information about the development of cell-based meats, as well as narration from Goodall. The documentary will also feature music from Moby who has joined as executive producer.

This is not the first time that Goodall has used her platform to raise awareness of the environmental issues surrounding the food we eat. Earlier this year, the Jane Goodall Institute released its first-ever cookbook to inspire those interested in sustainability, animal welfare, or conservation, to swap out meat for plant protein in their meals.
