Vegan Activist, Jabari Brisport, Set to Become First Gay, Black Member of New York Senate
Following his historic victory in the New York State Democratic Party election, Brisport is aiming to tackle social injustices for humans and animals.
‘Gay Vegan Socialist Elected in Brooklyn’, Jabari Brisport has tweeted, to describe his historic victory in the New York State Democratic Party election in District 25.
The 32-year-old has won the contest by more than 10,000 votes, and is set to become the first openly gay, Black member of New York State Legislature after November’s general election.
As a Democratic Socialist, Brisport’s vision of change is to build a fairer society for the working class and people of color.
Brisport is also a committed vegan activist, and has joined various protests, including an anti-fur demonstration outside a Canada Goose store.
“For too long we have allowed big animal agriculture companies to profit by the abuse, exploitation, and commodification of animals”, he says. “We can create a state where human beings and animals safely coexist without exploitation and abuse. To do this we must institute legislation that establishes legal rights, safety and protections for wildlife, farm animals, and domestic animals.”
As a state senator, Brisport hopes to tackle a number of important issues regarding animal welfare. These include a ban on the sale of commercially bred dogs, cats, and rabbits in New York, following the lead of states such as California, Maryland, and Maine. He also wants New York to follow California’s ban on fur products, and to outlaw travelling rodeos from performing in New York.
To combat factory farming, Brisport intends to introduce legislation that will help end cruel farming practises like castration, confinement, and debeaking, and will offer financial support for dairy farmers seeking to leave the industry.
