IKEA Is Making 50% Of Its Food Vegan
This pledge for more sustainable, plant-based food is set to make a huge difference for people and the planet, with the Swedish company serving food to over 680 million customers last year alone.
One of the world’s largest food providers has announced its commitment to a more sustainable and healthy future by making 50% of its food menus vegan.
The Swedish furniture giant IKEA served food to over 680 million customers last year alone, as part of its global restaurants, bistros and Swedish Food Markets.
Now, the brand is relying on the power of plants to create a positive change to both people and the planet. Announcing its sustainability goals at a pre-event for this year’s UN Food Systems Summit 2021, IKEA aims by 2025 to have:
50% of main meals offered in the restaurants to be plant-based and 80% to be non-red meat
80% of all packaged food offered to be plant-based
80% of all main meals offered in the restaurants to fulfil the IKEA Balanced Meal norm for healthier food
The brand’s commitment to sustainable plant-based food comes as the current food industry, particularly meat and dairy products, are increasingly blamed for their huge impact and strain on the environment and the world’s resources.
On their website, IKEA states that “according to recent science, eating less red meat, and more fruit and vegetables, is good for both people and the planet. The food system today contributes 25-30% of global greenhouse emissions, and a significant part comes from livestock production.”
