Burger King Opens a Meat-Free Restaurant in Central London

EAT

The flagship store will be open to the public for a one-month trial, serving plant-based fast-food items such as a cheeeze & bakon burger and vegan chilli cheeeze bites.

As the popularity of plant-based eating explodes across the world, restaurants continue to jump on board in an effort to attract this ever-growing consumer base. Because of this, it has never been easier to find tasty, veganized versions of popular animal-based products, from thick plant-based burger patties dripping with coconut-based cheese to crispy chicken subs slathered in egg-free mayonnaise.

Now, in yet another win for animals and the planet, one of the world’s most famous fast-food franchises, Burger King, has opened its first-ever meat-free store in the United Kingdom. Located in the prime spot of Leicester Square, London, the flagship store will be available for one month from March 14 until April 10.

The menu will be entirely free from animal meat, instead featuring its plant-based whopper and vegan royale. The menu will also include more than 15 new vegan items, such as a cheeeze & bakon burger, a plant-based bakon double cheeeze XL and vegan cheeeze & bakon royale.

Other options will include the vegan nugget burger, a plant-based double cheeezeburger, plant-based cheeeze & bakon whopper, as well as sides such as vegan chilli cheeeze bites. A separate meat-free menu will also be available for children.

The newly-launched vegan Katsu range, which is available nationwide for a limited time only, will also be available at the restaurant.

While the meat-free outlet is only available for one-month, Burger King said it may make some of the new plant-based menu items available nationwide depending on their popularity. And if the concept is particularly successful, it may consider making meat-free outlets a permanent fixture.

“We’re incredibly proud of our new meat-free menu; it absolutely delivers on big taste with no compromises and reflects our ongoing commitment to serving our customers a diverse and innovative range of products,” Burger King UK Chief Marketing Officer Katie Evans said in a statement. “The limited-edition menu is a direct result of our focus on vegan and plant-based innovation and goes hand in hand with our target of a 50 percent meat-free menu by 2030, as well as our commitment to sustainability and responsible business. We can’t think of a more fitting way to re-launch our new-look flagship in Leicester Square.”

“We challenge you to taste the difference!”

Burger King’s vegan Whopper patties, Royale chicken, and nuggets are supplied by plant-based meat company The Vegetarian Butcher. The brand says its products taste better than animal-based meat.

“At The Vegetarian Butcher, we believe that plant-based foods should be just as tasty as meat and our juicy range of meat-free products prove just that – showing that consumers don’t need to sacrifice a thing when making a plant-based switch,” Laura Iliffe of The Vegetarian Butcher said in a statement. “We’re providing meat-lovers the chance to cut-down meat without compromising on taste. We challenge you to taste the difference!”

“PETA applauds the UKs first all-vegan Burger King – a whopping great step in the right direction for animals and the environment. The planet needs a game-changing shift away from meat to combat the climate emergency, and Burger King is leading the way,” said Dawn Carr from PETA. “We love its expanding meat-free range: from the Vegan Royale to the Vegan Nuggets, these plant-powered, protein-packed meals appeal to both vegans and meat-eaters!”
