Vegan chicken tenders have just launched in nearly 400 restaurants across the U.S. as demand for plant-protein continues to grow.

The chicken tenders are the latest product from plant-based protein company Beyond Meat, which has continued to disrupt the global meat industry since launching its first U.S. retail product back in 2013.

The likes of the company’s Beyond Burger and Beyond Sausage have helped to take realistic meat-alternatives to the mainstream, allowing consumers to eat ‘meat’ that has a fraction of the carbon emissions compared to animal-based meat, and eliminates the need to farm animals.

Now, the national roll out of Beyond Meat’s chicken tenders is a major step in tackling the U.S.’s huge and unsustainable meat industry, which slaughters approximately 9 billion chickens every year for their meat.

The plant-based tenders are made from simple ingredients like faba beans and peas, but are crafted to look, cook, and taste like traditional chicken tenders. As well as being the more sustainable protein option, the tenders are healthier, too: they have 40% less saturated fat than the leading food-service chicken tender. Each serving contains 14g of protein, and they contain no cholesterol.

“We’re innovating the poultry market with the new Beyond Chicken Tenders—the result of our tireless pursuit for excellence and growth at Beyond Meat,” said Dariush Ajami, Beyond Meat’s Chief Innovation Officer. “As with all our products, Beyond Chicken Tenders offer delicious taste and an exceptional culinary experience, along with strong nutritional benefits”.

And this year also marked perhaps the company’s biggest deal yet: a three-year global partnership to provide the new McPlant line at McDonald’s.
