The Best U.S. Supermarkets for Plant-Based Food
New rankings by the Good Food Institute set out to find the country’s most vegan-friendly supermarkets.
With almost 25 percent of Americans now eating less meat, there is more choice than ever before when it comes to shopping for tasty, plant-based food.
Now, the GFI’s new report helps consumers decide where best to shop, by ranking the most vegan-friendly supermarkets.
Whole Foods was the overall winner: they carry hundreds of plant-based meat, egg, and dairy products, as well as a vast array of options in the prepared foods and foodservice sections. In particular, they have been a leader in innovative launches for in-store menus, including JUST egg breakfast sandwiches with Lightlife bacon, and Gardein sausage.
King Soopers came in second, with special mention made of items such as the Kroger’s Simple Truth plant-based line, which includes dairy and meal prep products, as well as the recently launched Emerge plant-based refrigerated meat line. The GFI noted how King Soopers make it easy for customers to build plant-based versions of the dishes they know and love.
Other high-scorers included Ralphs, Giant Food, and ShopRite. Wegmans, which came sixth overall, was recognised for stocking the most products, with more than 500 plant-based meat, egg, and dairy products on its shelves.
