Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Goes Vegetarian For Lent
Congresswoman asks her supporters to join her as she chooses to go meat-free for forty days, in honor of her colleague Rep. Raskin’s late son.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has pledged to go meat-free for forty days during Lent this year, in honor of her colleague Rep. Jamie Raskin’s late son, who was a passionate vegan activist.
Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter to ask her 12.4 million followers to join her in going meat-free.
The post received thousands of positive comments and over 70,000 likes, meaning that many others will likely be trying their own take on a meat-free pledge. As Ocasio-Cortez explains, “make it your own (you can go full 40 days, just Veggie Mondays, etc)”.
And the Congresswoman asked for inspiration through everyone’s favorite veggie recipes.
The meat-free pledge is in honor of Tommy Raskin, a vegan activist who Ocasio-Cortez says “dedicated his life to reducing suffering around the world”. Raskin suffered from depression and died by suicide aged twenty-five in December last year.
His family have since set up the Tommy Raskin Memorial Fund for People and Animals, and encourage acts of kindness in his memory.
