A Guide to Hosting a Plant-Based BBQ
Here are some ideas for creating a delicious plant-based BBQ spread that will impress vegans and meat-eaters alike.
You might be surprised at how easy it is to beef up your BBQ with delicious vegan plant-based food. From popular plant-based meat products, to colorful vegetable and tofu skewers, here are our favorite options for a guilt-free BBQ in the sun.
‘Meaty’ Burgers
A staple at any BBQ, choosing the right burger to impress your guests is key. For meaty burgers that will convince the plant-based skeptic, you can’t go wrong with leading brands like Impossible Burgers and Beyond Burgers. And they are easy to find too, with most supermarkets now stocking tasty plant-based patties.
Grilled Tofu & Veg Skewers
A great way to make your BBQ pop with color is to load skewers with some of your favourite veg - we think mushrooms, peppers, onions, and tomatoes work best. We love adding some firm tofu, cut into cubes, to add a tasty protein-packed punch.
Before grilling on the barbecue, remember to brush the loaded skewers with a sticky BBQ glaze.
Hot Dogs
There’s a cruelty-free plant-based version of all of your favorite foods and a meaty sausage is no exception. The popular choice is the incredibly realistic Beyond Sausage Brat Original, which makes for a filling hot dog.
Salad & Nibbles
Plant-based meat might take centre-stage at a barbecue, but don’t forget a salad spread to help bring everything together. We love this Kale, Pomegranate & Avocado Salad recipe by Deliciously Ella, which is full of flavors and color. Sticks of cucumber, carrots and celery are great finger-food to dip in a salsa or tub of hummus. Sweetcorn cobs make a tasty and easy snack, too - lather on some dairy-free butter, wrap them in foil, and grill on the barbecue.
Don’t Forget the Extras
A humble slice of vegan cheese can really make the burger, and there’s loads of brands to choose from - we’d recommend Daiya’s cheddar slices. Lots of sauces, like tomato ketchup and BBQ sauce, are naturally suitable for vegans, as well the popular Sriracha brands - just be sure to always check the label.
