$1 Million Prize To Accelerate Future of Cultivated Meat Announced

Investment platform, CULT Food Science Corp., has officially launched its CULT Prize, a CA$1 million, two-year global competition to help accelerate the future of cultivated foods.

The Vancouver, British Columbia-based company hopes to incentivize innovative and collaborative research programs to advance the development of novel technologies that will provide a sustainable, environmental, and ethical solution to the global factory farming and aquaculture crises.

The CULT Prize will challenge competing teams to produce new cell lines, scaffolding and growth media while demonstrating a reduced comparable environmental impact to existing meat-producing technologies. Candidates must also show that their research can add unique value to the cultivated meat market, in terms of increasing the speed, efficiency, and safety of production for distribution globally. CULT hopes that this new initiative will help to revolutionize the food supply of communities around the world and improve food security.

“We are tremendously proud to officially launch the CULT PRIZE which we hope will act as a catalyst for marked advancements across cellular agriculture, with a specific focus on cell lines, scaffolding and growth media,” said Dorian Banks, Chief Executive Officer of CULT. 

“Demonstrated by the Company’s seven unique cellular agriculture investments to date, our streaming portfolio of intellectual property that is currently under development, and now the launch of the CULT PRIZE, we at CULT Food Science are focused on revolutionizing food production and supporting a novel method to provide compassionate, ethical and highly nutritious products,” he added.

Cultivated meat - also known as cell-based or lab-grown meat - has been hailed as one of the leading solutions to eliminating factory farms and making the suffering of animals in the farming industry a thing of the past. Unlike plant-based alternatives, such as the Impossible Burger, slaughter-free meat is produced directly from animal cells. Simply put, cells are painlessly taken from a living animal and then scientists feed and nurture the cells so that they multiply. This method can be used to produce meat, fish, and dairy products all while removing the need to raise and farm animals for food.
