Live Lobsters are Shipped Around the Country: Speak Out

Lobsters are complex, highly intelligent, sentient beings that, like humans, can live to be over 100 years old. Lobsters can also establish social relationships, explore their surroundings using complex signals, and they can travel over 100 miles a year across the ocean floor.
In Maine alone there are over three million lobster traps set off the coast. These traps not only signal doom for lobsters as they are making their way along the seafloor, they also put endangered North Atlantic right whales at risk from dying due to entanglement in the lines.
It has been scientifically proven that lobsters can feel stress and pain. This fact led Switzerland to prohibit boiling live lobsters in 2018 and to ban the transport and stocking of live lobsters on ice or in ice water, as those practices were found to be inhumane.
Every year tens of millions of lobsters are trapped, killed, and consumed in the United States. All of the lobsters who are killed for human consumption experience stress and pain and the majority die suffering the unimaginable torment of being boiled alive. Some lobsters, however, are tragically forced to endure even more torturous final days by being shipped alive thousands of miles from their coastal homes before they are inevitably killed.
Amazon allows consumers across the United States to purchase live lobsters who are stuffed into styrofoam containers with a few ice packs, piled on top of one another and mailed across the country. According to amazon reviews for these horrific purchases the lobsters sometimes arrive dead meaning live lobsters are forced to travel for days with the dead bodies of other members of their species in the same tiny cooler. These highly intelligent, sentient beings deserve so much better than this.
Amazon should be ashamed for supporting the transport of live animals in inhumane conditions. Lobsters deserve our compassion just as much as any animal does and we must hold Amazon accountable for supporting animal cruelty and abuse.
